This is a reproduction sewing pattern to make a Red Cross Dog. Red Cross dogs were trained to locate the injured and to remain with them, barking to draw attention to the wounded on the battlefield. This pattern was released in 1916 under the authority of the Red Cross. Used as a fund raising item for war bonds during World War 1, it was sewn by women through out Europe, and eventually the United States.
This reproduction sewing pattern was published during World War One (1914 - 1918) as a fund raiser to benefit the American Red Cross relief effort. Proceeds from the pattern purchases were donated to the Red Cross. Seamstresses were encouraged to sew the dog (along with it's blanket with the red cross appliqued onto it) to sell at local charity bazaars and popular jumble sales. The monies raised from such events could be donated to the American Red Cross or towards the war effort.

Prior sewing experience and knowledge of working with vintage patterns is recommended.

While I have made up some of these patterns, I have not tested them all out and cannot attest to their accuracy or perfect fit. As with all garment construction, it is best to make a mock-up for fitting in test fabric prior to cutting and constructing with your final fashion fabric.
