This reproduction sewing pattern is from the May 6, 1876 issue of Harper's Bazar.
"The trimming for this black Barathea Dolman consists of corded folds of black gros grain ribbon, a fringe of saddler's silk and narrow crimped silk tape and passementerie agrafes."
Yardage amounts were not available for this pattern and no size was given—though a 32–34 inch bust and 22–24 inch waist are typical of the period.
This pattern has been re-digitized into its current format. All content falls under the copyright of www.BeespokeVintagePatterns.com, 2006. No portion of this pattern may be photocopied or reproduced by any means without written consent.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Due to the lack of directions, a solid understanding of vintage garment construction is highly recommended. The source material from which these early patterns are replicated contains significantly less information than more modern patterns from the 1920s and 1930s.
Patterns and fashion journals from this earlier era assumed the home seamstress possessed sufficient skills to construct garments without step-by-step instructions. As a result, patterns for facings, linings, and trims are often sketchy—or entirely absent.
Please be aware:
-
These patterns run small compared to modern sizing.
-
They were designed with the assumption that proper undergarments and corsetry would be worn.
-
Armholes especially tend to be tighter and smaller than in modern garments.
We strongly recommend making a fitting mock-up (toile) using muslin or waste fabric to adjust the fit for your individual figure before cutting your final fabric.
Patterns are reproduced directly from the original source material with no modern alterations, in order to retain historical accuracy. Prior sewing experience and familiarity with vintage patterns are advised.
Please note: This is not a finished garment. The original documentation and pattern sheet are not included.
**PLEASE KEEP IN MIND**
This is an exact copy of the original vintage pattern and as such may retain any original errors or miscalculations in formatting native to the original pattern. While I have made up some of these patterns, I have not tested them all out and cannot attest to their accuracy or perfect fit. As with all garment construction, it is best to make a mock-up for fitting in test fabric prior to cutting and constructing with your final fashion fabric.
