The original design and pattern were published in the May 6, 1876 issue of Harper's Bazar:
“This coat of black mixed water-proof cloth is furnished with a pleating and collar of black grosgrain ribbon and black horn buttons.”

Wool, Heavy Linen, Velvet, Water-proof Woolens
Materials Required (For Size Given):

Important Note:
A solid understanding of vintage garment construction is highly recommended.
The source materials from which these early patterns are replicated contain far less instruction than modern patterns from the 1920s and 1930s. Fashion journals of the time assumed the home seamstress had advanced sewing skills and did not require detailed directions.
Patterns for facings, linings, and trims are often sketchy or completely absent.
Keep in mind:
-
These patterns run small by today’s standards.
-
They were drafted with the assumption that corsets and period undergarments would be worn.
-
Armholes tend to be tighter and higher than what we’re used to today.
Because of this, it’s essential to make a mock-up of the pattern in muslin or scrap fabric to fit it to your individual shape before cutting into your fashion fabric.
Patterns are reproduced exactly as published to preserve historical accuracy. Prior sewing experience and confidence working with vintage patterns is strongly encouraged.
⚠️ This is not a finished garment.
⚠️ The original documentation and pattern are not included.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
This is an exact copy of the original vintage pattern. It may retain any original errors or formatting issues from the historical source.
While I have sewn up some of these patterns myself, I have not tested every one and cannot guarantee accuracy or fit.
As always, making a test garment (mock-up) is the best way to ensure success before cutting your final fabric.
