1876 Double-Breasted Basque Reproduction Sewing Pattern

This reproduction sewing pattern is from the May 6, 1876 issue of Harper’s Bazar.

“This double-breasted basque is made of black Cashmere and is closed with buttons and buttonholes. The trimming consists of a binding and bands of black woolen braid.”

No specific yardage or size was provided in the original publication, but typical measurements of the period are approximately 32–34 inch bust and 22–24 inch waist.

This pattern has been carefully re-digitized into its current format to preserve the historical integrity of the original design.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Early fashion publications such as Harper’s Bazar provided very limited instructions compared to modern sewing patterns. Designers at the time assumed that the average home seamstress already possessed a solid understanding of garment construction.

As a result:

  • There are often no instructions for facings, linings, or trims.

  • Written directions may be sketchy or completely absent.

  • A strong grasp of historical sewing techniques is highly recommended.

These patterns were drafted with the assumption that corsets and proper period undergarments would be worn. Please also note:

  • Vintage sizing runs much smaller than modern sizing.

  • Armholes tend to be significantly tighter.

  • A fitting mock-up (toile) in muslin or scrap fabric is strongly recommended before using your final fabric.

Patterns are reproduced exactly as originally published, with no modern alterations in order to maintain historical authenticity.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND

This is an exact copy of a vintage pattern and may still contain original formatting quirks or miscalculations.

While I’ve personally made some of these patterns, not all have been tested. As with any historical garment, always create a test version before committing to your fashion fabric.
