1898 Ladies’ Guimpe – Reproduction Sewing Pattern
This reproduction sewing pattern is sized to fit a 36-inch bust.
From 1898:
"Ladies’ Guimpe with high or open neck, and either of two styles of one-seam sleeve in full or shorter length. The Leg O’ Mutton sleeve being desirable for tucked material, lace, etc."
A Guimpe is a lightweight under-blouse worn beneath a jumper or pinafore to give the illusion of a complete blouse. The body is typically made of neutral or plain cotton, while the visible parts—such as sleeves, collar, and neckline—were often constructed of finer materials like lace or silk.

IMPORTANT NOTE
A solid understanding of vintage garment construction is highly recommended.
Patterns from this era often contain much less information than modern patterns. Fashion publications at the time assumed the home seamstress possessed the skill to construct garments without detailed instructions. As a result, patterns for:
-
Facings
-
Linings
-
Trim application
...are often minimal or entirely absent. Yardage information and sizing guidance may also be incomplete.
PLEASE NOTE:
-
Vintage patterns typically run smaller than today’s sizing.
-
These garments were designed with the assumption that corsets and proper undergarments would be worn.
-
Armholes especially tend to be tighter and smaller than modern garments.
It is very important to make a mock-up (toile) of the garment using muslin or scrap fabric to ensure a good fit before cutting into your final material.
Patterns are reproduced directly from the original source material with no alterations, to preserve historical authenticity.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
This is an exact reproduction of the original vintage pattern and may retain any formatting issues or drafting quirks found in the original.
While I have personally sewn some of these patterns, I have not tested them all, and cannot guarantee precise fit or accuracy.
As with any garment construction, it’s best to make a fitting mock-up in test fabric prior to using your final fashion fabric.
