1891 Beaded Mantelet – Reproduction Sewing Pattern
This reproduction sewing pattern is sized to fit a 38-inch bust, though due to the nature of the capelet design, it can comfortably fit a range of sizes.
Originally featured in Harper’s Bazaar, May 1891, this ladies’ beaded mantelet was designed for formal wear and suggested in black velvet. With its high collar and long beaded fringe, it offers an elegant, dramatic look — perfect for an evening at the opera.
Though it may appear to have sleeves (thanks to the high, puffed sleeve cap), this garment is actually a cape, not a coat or jacket. The collar can be reinforced with buckram to create the structured Medici-style stand so popular at the time.
What elevates this design to true formalwear is the attention to detail in:
-
Beading
-
Lace
-
Decorative trim
Suggested fabrics:
-
Embroidered velvet
-
Embroidered silk
-
Brocades
-
Lightweight wools
Suggested notions:
-

-

-

⚠️ Important Note:

IMPORTANT NOTE
Patterns like this, created in the late 19th century, were drafted for skilled home seamstresses and do not include the detailed instructions modern sewists may expect.
Patterns and fashion journals from this era assume prior knowledge of garment construction. As a result, details like facings, linings, and embellishments may be sparse or entirely absent.
A solid understanding of vintage garment construction is highly recommended.
Also important:
-
These patterns may run small by today’s standards.
-
They were designed to be worn with structured undergarments or corsets.
-
You should make a mock-up (toile) out of muslin or scrap fabric to adjust the pattern for your specific figure before using your fashion fabric.
All patterns are reproduced directly from the original source material to preserve historical authenticity.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
This is an exact copy of the original vintage pattern and may include original formatting errors or miscalculations.
While I have sewn some of these patterns myself, I have not tested every single one, and therefore cannot guarantee a perfect fit. As always, please make a fitting mock-up in test fabric before cutting into your final material.
