1899 Ladies Model Basque – Reproduction Sewing Pattern
This reproduced pattern is sized to fit approximately a 32" bust and 23" waist.
The 1899 Ladies’ Model Basque is the essential foundation piece for any period-correct late Victorian jacket. In the words of the original:
"This is the model with which to build your garment."
Included are three hem options, as well as multiple neckline variations:
-
Low round or square necklines
-
Higher Dutch round or square necklines
This is the basic silhouette required for late 19th-century fashion. From here, you can customize to your heart’s content with ruffles, pleating, or embellishments to create a stunning, standout garment.

IMPORTANT NOTE
A solid understanding of vintage garment construction is highly recommended.
The original source material for these early patterns contains significantly less information than modern patterns from the 1920s and 1930s. Fashion journals and patterns of the time presumed the home seamstress possessed the skills to complete a garment without step-by-step directions.
As such, patterns for facings, linings, and trims are often missing or extremely vague. This is not an error—it's simply how they were drafted back then.
Please keep in mind:
-
These patterns run small by modern standards.
-
They were designed to be worn with appropriate undergarments and corsets.
-
Armholes, in particular, tend to be much tighter and smaller than modern garments.
-
It’s essential to make a mock-up in muslin or other test fabric to adjust the fit before using your final fabric.
Patterns are reproduced without alteration to preserve historical accuracy.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
This is an exact reproduction of the original vintage pattern and may retain any original formatting issues or calculation errors. While I have sewn some of these patterns, I haven’t tested every single one and can’t guarantee a perfect fit out of the envelope.
As always, make a mock-up for fitting before cutting into your final fashion fabric.
