1897 Fantail Skirt – Reproduction Sewing Pattern

This elegant 1897 skirt pattern is sized to fit a 22-inch waist and was originally featured in the French fashion magazine La Mode Illustrée. The reproduction features a simple and graceful five-gore skirt, which flares into a beautiful bell shape.

The back includes inverted pleating along the rear panels, held in place by a waistband for a smart, understated fantail effect. Several pleats are concentrated at the center back, as seen in theatrical adaptations using this pattern.

Suggested Materials

  • Linen

  • Pique

  • Taffeta

  • Silk Plaids

  • Gingham

  • Cotton

  • Woolens

🧵 Note: The theatrical costume shown in photos was made by Lauren using this exact pattern. She removed the center front panel, embroidered its edge, lined it, and wore it over an underskirt for a layered, dramatic effect.

IMPORTANT NOTE

A solid understanding of vintage garment construction is highly recommended.

Patterns and publications from this period provide limited instruction, as they assumed the home seamstress already possessed advanced sewing skills. Detailed pieces like facings, linings, and trimming guides are often missing or minimally described.

Keep in mind:

  • These patterns run small by modern standards.

  • They were drafted with the assumption that corsets and proper undergarments would be worn.

  • Please create a mock-up (toile) in muslin or other test fabric first, and adjust the fit to your individual body before cutting into your fashion fabric.

Patterns are reproduced exactly as originally published, with no alterations, to preserve historical accuracy.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND

This is an exact reproduction of the original pattern, and may retain any original formatting quirks or drafting errors.

While I’ve sewn some of these patterns myself, I have not tested them all, so I can’t guarantee perfect fit or ease of construction. As with all historical garment making, it is best to make a fitting mock-up first.
