1897 Teen Girl's Five-Gored Skirt – Reproduction Sewing Pattern
This reproduction sewing pattern is sized for a 14-year-old with a 24-inch waist. While a 24-inch waist may fit some adults, the skirt length is approximately 31 inches, which is shorter than most adult sizes. For adult wear, this pattern would require significant lengthening.
Pattern Features
This 1897 skirt design is a simple five-gored style that flares gracefully at the back into a flowing, elegant shape.
-
Back fullness is gathered (though pleating would also be period-appropriate)
-
Attached waistband with back closure
-
Sized small, but can be adjusted to widen and lengthen for a better fit
-
A stunning patchwork sample by @kaiceyscostumes is featured – isn't it lovely?
Fabric Requirements
-
Recommended yardage: 3 ¾ yards of 44-inch wide fabric
-
Suggested period-appropriate fabrics: Wool, Cotton, Lightweight Linen, or Silk

IMPORTANT NOTE
🧵 Solid vintage sewing knowledge is highly recommended.
Patterns from the 19th and early 20th centuries lack the detailed instructions found in modern patterns. At the time, fashion magazines and publishers assumed the home seamstress already had the skills needed to complete a garment with minimal guidance.
Please be aware:
-
Patterns may not include facings, linings, or trim instructions
-
Sizing runs small by modern standards
-
Drafting assumes use of historically accurate undergarments and corsets
-
Always make a fitting mock-up in muslin or scrap fabric to adjust the fit for your individual shape
Patterns are reproduced directly from the original source material with no alterations, in order to maintain historical accuracy.
🔹 This is a pattern only – NOT a finished garment
🔹 Original instructions and documentation are not included
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND
This is an exact replica of the original vintage pattern and may retain formatting quirks or measurement inconsistencies. While I have made up many of these patterns, I have not tested them all, and cannot guarantee their fit or accuracy.
As always, I highly recommend making a mock-up before working with your final fashion fabric.
