Red Cross dogs were trained to locate the injured and to remain with them, barking to draw attention on the battlefield. This pattern was released in 1916 under the authority of the Red Cross. Used as a fund raising item for war bonds during World War 1, it was sewn by women through out Europe, and eventually the United States to benefit the American Red Cross relief effort. Proceeds from the pattern purchases were donated to the Red Cross. Seamstresses were encouraged to sew the dog (along with it's blanket with the red cross appliqued onto it) to sell at local charity bazaars and popular jumble sales.
