This replicated sewing pattern is sized to fit a 22 1/2 inch head. This 1927 hat features two different styles for a formal or informal look. The black hat is more casual, with a narrow brim that is turned up at back, and a softer less fitted crown. The beige hat is more tailored - the crown being made of several sections, with a decorative band replacing the brim. SUGGESTED MATERIALS: Black Hat - Velvet or Felt. I measured the length of the side crown, within the seam allowances, and it came to 21.75". I measured the circumference of the top at the seam allowance, and got 23". Which surely explained my problem! So I cut a new side crown and brim and added in the extra 1.25". It made sense how the error happened - the edge of the pattern piece measures 22.5", which is what the pattern says the size of the hat is. The seam allowances just weren't taken into account. With the circumference of the top (and the crown, once sewn) being 23" at the seam, that is actually perfect for a head that measures 22.5", with a .5" of fitting ease built in. I really do like the pattern; thank you for providing it" This McCall pattern was originally created by Dec. 30, 1929 and has been re-digitized into it's current format.
